Our mission statement, Opening doors—teaching English as a second language, says it all for us!

The Adult Literacy League of Sonoma County is a non-profit, all volunteer community organization teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to persons 18 years or older residing anywhere in Sonoma County. We have been providing literacy services in Sonoma County since 1969. All our services are free to our students—we never charge them a fee. And, all of our more than 150 tutors and teachers are volunteers. If reading and literacy are high on your list of values, we invite you to join us.

We know from studies that English Literacy—the ability to read, write and speak the English language—is a good predictor of social, economic and individual success in the United States. Poor literacy skills are linked directly to high crime rates, low personal esteem, gang activity, unemployment, inadequate parenting skills, and low educational achievement.

The latest U.S. Census data tells us that there are more than 39,000 adults in Sonoma County who are functionally illiterate in English. If you love to read, if sharing your knowledge with another person is part of your passion, if you are willing to give your personal time to enrich the life of another—then join us and help open doors for others.
